Congrats on your new wheels, and kudos for making the decision to reduce your carbon footprint by purchasing an electric vehicle! Ontario’s future is looking greener thanks to you.

Depending on the make and model of the EV you chose, you may have already received up to $14,000 towards your purchase or lease through Ontario’s Electric Vehicle Incentive Program (EVIP), but did you know there’s another $1,000 up for grabs?
Today we’ll be sharing everything you need to know about the Electric Vehicle Charging Incentive Program, and how we can help you get that $1,000 rebate.

What’s the Electric Vehicle Incentive Program (EVIP)?
If you don’t have an electric vehicle yet, you might be wondering what the EVIP is, to begin with. The EVIP was created by the Ontario government to encourage car buyers to make greener purchase decisions. Those who choose to buy or lease an eligible electric vehicle, or EV, are rewarded with a rebate of up to $14,000 off their purchase or lease.

Though the EVIP has been around since 2010, the incentives were updated on January 1, 2017, with a few goals in mind:
  • To make electric vehicles more affordable for consumers
  • To provide incentives for electric vehicles with larger batteries and more seating capacity
  • To ensure the zero-emissions vehicles (ZEV) are better supported

By encouraging electric vehicle adoption provincially, the EVIP contributes to reducing greenhouse gas emissions from vehicles in Ontario.

What vehicles are eligible for the EVIP?
When you think of electric vehicles, the Tesla probably comes to mind. What you may not know is that the province has listed 18 vehicle manufacturers that produce vehicles that are eligible for the Electric Vehicle Incentive Program. While the list does include Tesla, it also includes Ford, Chevrolet, Honda, Toyota and several other OEMs.

It’s important to note that only new vehicles are eligible to receive the incentive. That is, the vehicle must not be previously plated, registered or insured, and it must be roadworthy. If you purchased a demo from a dealership, it must have only been used for test drives and have less than 2,000km to be eligible.

Check out frequently asked questions about the EVIP here: Questions & Answers About Ontario's Electric Vehicle (EVIP) Program.

What’s the Electric Vehicle Charging Incentive Program (EVCIP)?
Okay, so you purchased your new electric vehicle and now you need a charging station for your home. This is where we can help! We’ve installed plenty of electric vehicle charging stations for homeowners throughout Hamilton, Halton and Niagara and are recognized as a trusted local, licensed electrician in the area.

In an effort to show its support for electric vehicle owners, the province is offering Ontarians up to $1,000 towards the purchase and installation of EV charging stations for their homes. If you’ve already received a rebate for the purchase of your new electric vehicle, you’re also eligible to receive the rebate for the charging station.

Find answers to frequently asked questions about the EVCIP here: FAQs about the Electric Vehicle Charging Incentive Program.

What’s a Level 2 charging station?
Sure, you could plug your electric vehicle into a regular household outlet, but if you want to charge your vehicle 3 to 5 times faster, you’ll have to upgrade to a Level 2 charging station. A Level 2 (220V, 30amps) station is the same kind of plug required for stoves and dryers.

The electric vehicle charging incentive program offers Ontarians up to $1,000 towards the purchase and installation of your Level 2 charging station. Specifically, it covers 50% of the purchase cost (up to $500) and 50% of the installation cost (up to $500) for a total maximum of $1,000.

What’s the fine print?
Here’s a quick checklist to ensure your eligibility for the electric vehicle charging station rebate:
  • You’re an Ontarian that purchased a new electric vehicle
  • You received an EVIP rebate for that vehicle
  • Your charging station is for residential use only (not public or for customers)
  • You’re installing a Level 2 station with a nominal voltage rating of 208-240 V only
  • The charging station is designed to charge one vehicle at a time (unless you purchased two electric vehicles and received two rebates, dual port stations aren’t eligible)
  • Your charging station is on the list of approved charging stations
  • Your charging station was purchased in Canada, from a Canadian source

The following expenses are eligible for the rebate:
  • The purchase of the charging station itself (50% of the cost up to a max of $500)
  • The cost of installation by a Licensed Electrical Contractor, like Begley Electric Inc. (50% of the installation cost, up to $500)
  • The cost for an electrical inspection undertaken by ESA (Electrical Safety Authority)

To receive this rebate, you will need to apply within three months from the date you purchased your Level 2 charging station. Note: that is the date you purchased the station, not the date it was installed!

You will be required to demonstrate proof of installation, which can be done by showing your certificate of inspection by the ESA. If you choose to hire Begley Electric to complete the installation, we can obtain this for you.
